PROJECT OVERVIEW

Relay is a lightweight, low-latency voice communication platform designed for friends and gaming communities. It provides private voice rooms, push-to-talk, text chat, screen and camera sharing, synchronized video watching, and real-time connection status - all with a strong focus on low bandwidth usage, simplicity, and privacy.

Relay is a lightweight and privacy-focused voice communication platform built for friends, gamers, and small communities. Its main goal is to provide a simple alternative to traditional communication platforms by focusing on the features people actually need without unnecessary complexity. At its core, Relay offers low-latency voice chat through private rooms. Users can create a room and communicate with their friends while keeping bandwidth usage under control. Voice bitrate can be manually adjusted between 12 and 48 kbps, and the platform avoids sending audio data during periods of silence, helping reduce unnecessary network usage and minimize its impact on gaming performance. Relay also includes a Push-to-Talk (PTT) mode, allowing users to hold a key to speak and automatically mute their microphone when the key is released. The PTT key can be customized according to the user's preferences. For gaming, Relay provides an in-game media key integration that allows users to toggle their microphone using the keyboard's Play/Pause media key, even when the browser is running in the background. This makes microphone control possible without requiring additional desktop software. Privacy is another important part of the platform. Users can protect their voice rooms with passwords, allowing only people who know the password to join. Relay also includes a lightweight text chat alongside voice communication, with data being transmitted when messages are actually sent. Beyond voice communication, Relay supports screen sharing and camera sharing, giving users the option to share their screen or camera whenever needed. The platform is designed to keep these features relatively lightweight in terms of bandwidth. Another notable feature is synchronized video watching. Users can paste a YouTube or other video link and watch it together with other participants while keeping playback synchronized across the room. Relay also provides real-time connection status information, making it possible to see which users may have a weak connection or are currently reconnecting. Overall, Relay positions itself as a simple, lightweight, gaming-oriented communication platform that combines voice chat, text messaging, media sharing, and synchronized watching in a single browser-based experience. Its main differentiators are its focus on low bandwidth consumption, private rooms, gaming-friendly controls, and avoiding unnecessary features or complexity.
